Children under 14 are not admitted at Széchenyi, Rudas, Lukács or Dandár, so the famous baths are off the list for most families. The family bath is Palatinus on Margaret Island: children aged 3 to 14 pay a child rate, there are family tickets for three and four people, and it has two children’s pools. Under-14s can also go to the city’s other public baths, but they need a doctor’s prescription for the medicinal pools.
Budapest: Palatinus Spa & Pools Full-Day Admission
Which Budapest baths admit children
The rules come from Budapest Spas, the operator that runs most of the city’s public baths. They are firm, and staff may ask for an original passport or ID card to check a child’s age.
| Bath | Under-14s | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Széchenyi | Not admitted | No children’s pool |
| Rudas | Not admitted | Massage from age 14 |
| Lukács | Not admitted | Massage from age 14 |
| Dandár | Not admitted | |
| Gellért | Closed | Closed since 1 October 2025 |
| Palatinus | Admitted | Child rate ages 3-14, family tickets, two children’s pools |
| Paskál, Csillaghegy, Pesterzsébet | Admitted | Medicinal pools only with a doctor’s prescription |
| Sparty (Saturday nights at Széchenyi) | 18+ only | Photo ID required |
A 14-year-old can go to Széchenyi or Rudas, so a family with teenagers has the full choice. For younger children, the decision is between Palatinus, which is central and easy to reach, and the outer-district baths, which need a longer trip. If one parent wants a historic bath, the simplest plan is to split the day: one adult soaks at Széchenyi while the other takes the children to Palatinus, then swap.
Do not try to bring a younger child on an adult ticket. The Széchenyi day ticket and the Rudas listings on GetYourGuide repeat the under-14 rule, and a child turned away at the door means a wasted ticket.
Palatinus: the family bath on Margaret Island
Palatinus sits on Margaret Island, reached by bus 26. It is open every day of the year, and from 19 October 2026 it runs from 9:00 to 16:00 daily. That is a short day, so arrive in the morning; ticket sales end an hour before closing and the pools are cleared 20 minutes before.
The bath has 3 indoor pools and 8 outdoor pools. The ones that matter for families:
- An indoor children’s pool at 32-34 °C and an outdoor children’s pool at 30-32 °C.
- Outdoor seating pools at 32-36 °C, open 365 days a year.
- A 40 m swimming pool at 26 °C, reachable year round through a heated corridor. Swim caps are required in it.
- In summer, a wave pool at 28 °C that runs hourly from 10:40, plus adventure, strand and Margaréta pools.
The wave pool and most of the outdoor pools are summer features. In autumn and winter, the year-round pools are the seating pools and the swimming pool, so do not promise the children the wave pool on a November visit.
The healing pool (36 °C) and the hot and cold plunge pools need a doctor’s prescription for under-14s, so children stick to the children’s, seating and swimming pools.
Palatinus prices and family tickets
These are the operator’s 2026 prices, weekday first and then weekends and holidays.
| Ticket | Mon-Fri | Weekend / holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, full day | 3,800 HUF | 4,200 HUF |
| Child (3-14), pensioner, student | 2,500 HUF | 2,800 HUF |
| Family ticket, 3 people | 7,600 HUF | 8,400 HUF |
| Family ticket, 4 people | 10,100 HUF | 11,200 HUF |
| 2-hour ticket | 2,600 HUF | 3,000 HUF |
The family tickets save a little: two adults and two children would pay 12,600 HUF on single weekday tickets, against 10,100 HUF on the family ticket. Palatinus does not publish a rule for children under 3, so ask at the cash desk.
If you would rather book ahead, the Palatinus full-day admission includes a cabin or locker and is rated 4.3 from 466 reviews. On dates we checked in late October 2026 it cost about $30 a person. That is more than the walk-in price, so it suits families who want the ticket sorted before the trip. Our Palatinus admission review and the Palatinus tickets page cover the bath in more detail.
Other baths that take children
Three smaller public baths, all run by the same operator, admit under-14s under the prescription rule for medicinal pools.
- Paskál, in District XIV, opens Monday to Friday 9:00-20:00, Saturday 8:00-20:00 and Sunday 8:00-22:00, by trolleybus 77 or 82. The Paskál bath entry lists a kids’ pool, water attractions and a playground, and says adults may not stay in the kids’ pools. It is not suitable for children under 3, and cost about $28 on dates we checked. See our Paskál review.
- Pesterzsébet, in District XX, opens Monday to Friday and Sunday 8:00-20:00 and Saturday 8:00-22:00. The Pesterzsébet salt-iodine spa ticket lists an outdoor wave pool and a children’s pool, also about $28. See our Pesterzsébet review.
- Csillaghegy, in District III, opens daily 6:00-20:00 (Wednesday to 22:00). Its day ticket listing says the Children’s World runs only at weekends from October to June, and the sauna world is 14+.
All three are a longer trip from the center than Palatinus. Pay at the desk by card, since the public baths do not take cash at their shops and cafés.
Hotel spas and private spas
Ensana Thermal Margaret Island, a hotel spa on the same island, sells day tickets to non-hotel guests only “depending on current occupancy”. Its FAQ says children under 6 stay free, but that is a room policy for hotel guests, and the day-spa page sets out no age rule. If you are thinking of it with children, call the spa on +36 1 889 4737 first. Day guests cannot use it at all from 19 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Private and luxury spas set their own limits on GetYourGuide. The Mandala Day Spa pool experience is not suitable for children under 16, and the Mandala massage package not for under-12s. The beer spas and Sparty are adults only. Our luxury spas page compares these options for adults.
Packing for a family bath day
Bring swimsuits, slippers or flip-flops (compulsory at the public baths), swim caps for the swimming pools and towels. Bring a photo ID or passport for each child too, in case staff ask about ages. Our what to bring list has the full checklist, and our winter baths guide covers which pools stay warm when it is cold.
