Yes, Széchenyi is worth visiting in winter: the outdoor thermal pool stays at 36 to 38 °C while the air averages around 0 °C, so you soak in hot water with steam rising around you. The caveats are a cold walk from the changing rooms, no towel or robe rental, and holiday weeks when queues and prices go up. A weekday ticket with a locker was $52 on dates we checked in late October 2026, and the fast-track admission with locker was $77.

The verdict: why winter works, and the catches
Three reasons to go between November and March:
- The outdoor water is warm. The thermal pool runs at 36 to 38 °C, the leisure pool at 32 to 34 °C and the swimming pool at 26 to 28 °C. In freezing air, steam hangs over all three.
- The bath does not announce a winter closure for its outdoor pools, and the Sparty night party uses them on winter Saturdays, so the outdoor part is a year-round experience.
- Indoors there is a medical therapy pool at 28 to 40 °C and plunge pools at 18 and 40 °C, which give you somewhere to warm up between outdoor soaks.
And the catches:
- You walk across open ground in a swimsuit to reach the outdoor pools.
- Széchenyi does not rent towels or robes. You bring your own or buy them on site.
- Individual pools can close for maintenance at short notice; the bath posts this in its news section, and does not publish a separate winter pool list.
- Under-14s are not admitted, so families should look at our Palatinus tickets page.
- Around Christmas and New Year the bath charges a peak-period price on dates it does not list in advance, and those are the days the city is fullest.
If you only have one bath slot in a winter trip, make it Széchenyi. If you want to stay warm indoors the whole time, Rudas suits you better; our winter guide to all the baths compares the two.
How cold the walk really is
Budapest’s average temperature is 0.3 °C in December, -0.6 °C in January and 1.2 °C in February, with January nights typically around -4 °C. Once you are in the thermal pool, that air is the pleasant part: your body is warm and your face is cool. The cold comes in the minutes before and after.
Where you change depends on your ticket. A locker ticket uses the public changing rooms at the Állatkerti körút entrance or the cabins at the Gőz entrance, and a cabin ticket gives you a private cabin at the Állatkerti körút or Kós Károly entrance. A wristband opens your locker or cabin. From there you head out to the courtyard pools.
What makes the walk easy:
- Wear slippers. They are compulsory anyway, and they keep your feet off cold stone.
- Wear a robe to the poolside and leave it within reach of the steps.
- Get in at once and keep your shoulders under the water.
- When you get out, put the robe straight back on and go inside to warm up before you change.
Keep your wristband on the whole time. At Rudas, run by the same operator, a lost locker watch or key costs 3,000 HUF.
Best time of day to go in winter
The two windows that work best are early morning and Friday evening.
The Good Morning ticket lets you in before 9:00 with a locker. The bath opens at 7:00 Monday to Thursday and Friday, and at 8:00 at weekends. On GetYourGuide the Monday to Thursday morning pass was $44 on dates we checked in late October 2026, the cheapest way into Széchenyi we found, and the official price is 10,500 HUF on weekdays and 11,800 HUF at weekends. A morning ticket only lets you enter within the hours stated on the option.
Friday is the one evening the bath stays open to 22:00. Ticket sales end at 21:00 and the pools must be vacated 20 minutes before closing, so arrive by about 19:30 to get two hours in. In winter it is dark by then, so you soak under a night sky. The Széchenyi day ticket sells a Friday evening option that is valid only in its stated hours.
On other days the bath closes at 20:00, with last tickets at 19:00. For a full list of late baths across the week, see our guide to the baths at night.
Weekday or weekend: what it costs
Széchenyi charges more from Friday to Sunday, and more again on peak dates.
| Ticket | Mon-Thu | Fri-Sun | Peak dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locker, official price 2026 | 13,200 HUF | 14,800 HUF | 15,800 HUF |
| Good Morning (entry before 9:00), official | 10,500 HUF | 11,800 HUF | |
| Fast Track with locker, official (online only) | 15,200 HUF | 16,800 HUF | 17,800 HUF |
| Széchenyi day ticket, locker | $52 | $73 on a busy Saturday | |
| Same ticket, private cabin | $55 | $79 on a busy Saturday |
GetYourGuide prices are for dates we checked between 24 October and 2 November 2026, which included a holiday weekend, so a quieter winter Saturday may cost less. The 4139 ticket has a 4.3 rating from 28,758 reviews and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Our review of the Széchenyi day ticket explains the 13 options.
Christmas and New Year hours
Széchenyi’s two official pages disagree on the holiday times. The main hours page says the bath opens at 8:00 on key days from 18 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with 25 December and 1 January open to 20:00. The holiday page lists:
- 24 December: 7:00-13:00
- 25 December: 10:00-20:00
- 26 December: 10:00-20:00
- 31 December: 8:00-18:00
- 1 January: 10:00-20:00
If you are going on 25 December or 1 January, check the bath’s holiday page the week before, because the start time is either 8:00 or 10:00 depending on which page is right.
Fast track in the peak weeks
Between Christmas and the first week of January, when locker queues are most likely, a fast-track ticket is worth paying more for. The fast-track admission with locker was $77 on our dates, uses a separate entrance and includes the locker, the indoor and outdoor pools, the saunas and the steam rooms. It has free cancellation up to 24 hours before and a 4.2 rating from 12 reviews. The fast-track option on the 4139 day ticket was $73 on a weekday. Read our fast-track review before you choose.
The warm upgrade: Palm House
If the cold walk is the part that puts you off, the Palm House pass solves most of it. At $123 on our dates, it adds access to the Palm House relaxation area, a tropical greenhouse with lounge chairs, plus cabin use, a bathrobe and towel for your stay, disposable slippers, a swim cap, one cocktail, unlimited mineral water and a fruit bowl. That covers everything you would otherwise have to bring or buy. It includes a full-day ticket to the main pools too. The Palm House is open 9:00-18:00 Monday to Thursday and 9:00-19:00 Friday to Sunday, so it does not cover a Friday late session. See our Palm House review.
What to bring
- Swimsuit (proper swimwear only) and slippers.
- Robe and towel, or plan to buy them on site.
- Swim cap for the swimming pools.
- Photo ID, which staff may ask to see.
- A bank card: the bath’s shops and cafés take cards, not cash.

Our what to bring guide has the full checklist, and our Széchenyi tickets page compares every ticket.
