How a Bath Trip Fits Together

Four steps from choosing a date to the first soak.

  1. Pick your main bath

Széchenyi, Rudas and Palatinus are in three different parts of the city. Decide which one you will spend the most time in.

  2. Book the ticket first

Every ticket on this page has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so fix the bath day and book the room around it.

  3. Sleep within walking distance

From the hotels on this page, the bath is about 11 to 20 minutes on foot, or a short metro, tram or bus ride.

  4. Walk back after a late soak

Széchenyi stays open to 22:00 on Fridays, Sparty runs to 2:00 on Saturdays and Rudas night bathing runs to 3:00.

The Baths Near Each Area

Széchenyi for City Park, Rudas for the Buda riverside, and Palatinus, the Ensana spa and Lukács around Margaret Island.

Where to stay

The Three Areas, and the Hotels in Each

Stay near the bath you will visit most. For Széchenyi, the bath most first-time visitors book, that means City Park and upper Andrássy út, about 13 minutes on foot from the hotels below, with the M1 metro running underneath. For Rudas and its Turkish bath, stay on the Buda riverside between the Chain Bridge and Gellért Hill. For a quieter trip, or with children, stay on Margaret Island, where two hotels have their own thermal spa and Palatinus is a short walk away. Only one ticket we review includes hotel pickup, the Széchenyi entry with private transfer, so for every other bath the walk from your hotel is part of the day.

City Park and upper Andrássy út (Districts VI and XIV)

Széchenyi is at Állatkerti körút 9-11 in City Park. The bath lists tram 1 and trolleybus 72, and the M1 metro stops at Széchenyi fürdő station. A hotel here lets you walk over for the 7:00 opening on weekdays, stay until 22:00 on a Friday, or get back from a Sparty night, which runs on Saturdays from 21:30 to 2:00. The Széchenyi day ticket was from $52 on a weekday on dates we checked in late October 2026. Our Széchenyi review → The trade-off is distance from the river and the old town, which is a metro ride away down Andrássy út.

  • Mamaison Hotel Andrassy Budapest, at Andrássy út 111 near Heroes’ Square, with air-conditioned rooms and free access to a fitness club. About 13 minutes on foot to the bath.
  • Mirage Medic Hotel, in a 19th-century building at the entrance to City Park. Its listing puts Széchenyi 1,969 feet away, and some rooms have a balcony.
  • ibis Styles Budapest Heroes Square, the lower-priced pick, 165 feet from Hősök tere metro station. Some rooms overlook the Zoo.
  • Benczur Hotel, on a quiet street in the embassy quarter with a garden, near Bajza utca station on the M1. About 13 minutes on foot to the bath.

Buda riverside by the bridges (Districts I and XI)

Rudas is at Döbrentei tér 9, at the Buda end of Elisabeth Bridge at the foot of Gellért Hill. The Buda bank is quieter at night than central Pest, and the hotels below are about 17 to 18 minutes on foot from the bath. Rudas lists trams 19, 41, 56 and 56A and buses 7, 8E, 108E, 110 and 112 if you prefer to ride. Staying close pays off for the men-only mornings and women-only Tuesdays in the Turkish bath, and for night bathing on Fridays and Saturdays from 22:00 to 3:00. Check the day’s schedule on rudasfurdo.hu, because it can change. The Rudas day pass with a 3-course meal was from $84 on a weekday on dates we checked; only the Turkish bath option includes the Turkish bath. Our Rudas review →

  • Hotel Clark Budapest, adults only, on Clark Ádám tér at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge, with a rooftop bar and a sauna.
  • Hotel Charles, on Hegyalja út below Gellért Hill, with spacious rooms that have a kitchenette and bus stops at the door.
  • Hotel Bara Gellért, the lower-priced pick, a short walk from the Citadella, with balconies, soundproofed rooms and a lift.

Margaret Island and Újlipótváros (District XIII)

This is the area for a slower trip. Palatinus, the family bath, is on the island, and the two Ensana hotels a few hundred meters north give their guests free use of the Ensana spa, with thermal, recreational and swimming pools, saunas and a steam room. From the Ensana hotels, Palatinus is about 11 minutes on foot; the bath lists bus 26. Lukács is on the Buda side by Margaret Bridge, about 20 minutes on foot from the Újlipótváros hotels, or on trams 4, 6, 17 and 19.

  • Ensana Thermal Margaret Island, the modern hotel built around the spa, where every room has a balcony.
  • Ensana Grand Margaret Island, a hotel from 1873 linked to the Ensana Thermal spa by a heated underground hall.
  • Danubius Hotel Helia, on the Pest bank facing the island, with its own pools, spa and a two-story fitness club; most rooms overlook the river.
  • NH Budapest City, a 10-minute walk from the Danube and Margaret Island, with a sauna and its own garage.
  • City Hotel Ring, the lower-priced pick, on the Grand Boulevard 820 feet from Nyugati station.

Not staying at the Ensana? The Margaret Island day spa ticket was $43 on dates we checked, but day tickets depend on how busy the hotel is, and non-hotel guests cannot use the spa from 19 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Our Margaret Island spa review → The Palatinus full-day admission was $30, and Palatinus currently closes at 16:00. See Palatinus tickets and Lukács tickets for the details.

Booking tips

Book the bath first. Every ticket named on this page has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so fix the date and book the room around it. Pack for the bath, not just the city: Széchenyi does not rent towels or robes, slippers are compulsory and swim caps are required in the swimming pools, all covered in what to bring. The public baths take cards only at their shops and cafés. If you are travelling with children, remember that Széchenyi, Rudas, Lukács and Dandár do not admit anyone under 14, so Margaret Island and Palatinus are the better base. Still choosing a bath? Our best thermal baths in Budapest page compares them all.

"The thermal baths were fantastic. Really simple entry and once in you could stay all day. Outside there is a relaxing pool, a swimming pool and a fun pool with a jacuzzi and a whirlpool current. There are also multiple indoor pools too. The water is lovely at 38C. There are security boxes beside the pool for your phone etc which are coded to your wristband, really easy to use. Overall fantastic experience. Just remember your towel and slippers!"

"Great place, water at 38°C. We arrived at 7:00 AM, and there weren't many people there. At 9:00 AM, we had breakfast at the restaurant. The cappuccino is amazing!"

"Think it’s slightly overpriced compared to other countries. But was a nice relaxing afternoon"

"Everything was great. The pools were nice and fun, especially with the whirlpool areas. My only suggestion is that there are no clear instructions on where to go when you first arrive, or once you're inside. We had to look around for people and walk in the back of the place to go in for the fast pass option. Also once inside the staff wasn’t around and once we found someone there were still no clear instructions as to where to go. Once we figured it out we had a great time and it was a great experience."

"Disappointed the main pool was closed Very good day exceeded all expectations would highly recommend getting the private cabin for changing and keeps your things dry and safe. The comunal Changing rooms are VERY busy."

"The Széchenyi Baths were a great experience during our trip to Budapest. The outdoor pools are beautiful, but we also loved the indoor area, with its various thermal baths and saunas. The private changing rooms where you can leave your clothes were a great idea."
